Forum: movies Subject: Please convert these to Mpeg-1, 2, 4 if possible

OK, I made the mistake (?) of uploading DV-encoded .mov files, as I assumed that they would be converted to vcd, mpeg-2, and mpeg-4 automatically. Now I see that it is recommended to upload the file in mpeg-2, then a request must be made that they be converted. Is this correct?

These are the files that need conversion, if possible:
TwoDementia
and
PhaseFive

Also, the second one is stuck on the thumbnail maker.

Hi Forrest,

I fixed the thumbnail problem with the latter movie. However, when I tried to make MPEG4s out of it, it freaked out and (horribly) deleted the source file (500+mb). I apologize :( Any way you can reupload it?

Apparently our tool can only make MPEG4s out of MPEG2 and MPEG1 files. Any chance you can upload the MPEG2 instead of the DV or point me to some literature about creating MPEG2 files out of DV files using console-based tools (not X) on Linux?

Forum: movies Subject: reuploaded PhaseFive

The entry had been wiped out for PhaseFive, as well as the file. I figured out how to make good Mpeg-2 files, so I uploaded that instead of the huge one. That one can be converted to mp4 now, if you promise to not wipe it out again ;) The other one is processing now, will advise when I upload it.

For future reference, is the forum the best way to report these problems? I have had more luck using the forum than the report error function.

Hi Forrest,

Cool - thanks for reuploading. The MPEG4s for Phase Five are almost done. Once they are, I'll approve the item and it will become public.

The error report feature is intended for reporting problems with a file (i.e. movie is cut off and needs to be re-encoded, audio is too fast, etc.). In cases like yours, using the forum is appropriate and will catch my eye faster.

Thanks again!

Jon

Forum: movies Subject: new versions of PhaseFive and TwoDementia

I hate to be a pain about this, but I'm still figuring it all out.

I made a new Mpeg-2 for PhaseFive in my upload directory, which fixes interlacing and aspect ratio issues and makes it about 1/3 the size. The current Mpeg-2 can be replaced with this one.

Also, I have noticed a very strange issue with the Mpeg-4 versions of PhaseFive: the sound is off-sync in the middle of the file. This might be due to the fact that most of the file is silent; the other versions do not have this issue. Perhaps they should be redone from the new Mpeg-2 file?

Lastly, there is a Sorenson-encoded Quicktime version of TwoDementia in my upload directory. The current .mov can be replaced with this new one, because the current one is ridiculously huge. I might get around to remastering TwoDementia into Mpeg-2, but it will not be any time soon. For now, just the new Quicktime will be fine.

Thank you for all of your help and patience! Now that I have it figured out there will be no more of this reuploading nonsense._.

Hmm... Maybe I should just figure out how to make Mpeg-2 files on my own. Does anybody have any pointers for doing this (for free) on a PC?

I converted your 2 QT movies to AVI using qtpro and consider the picture and sound quality to be excellent

in each case, the archive page shows a link to the video sites..From there you can get direct downoads of the videos, 36mb and 11mb approx

Yes, those are old encodings in Sorenson 3. I thought that the archive would store the films in VCD, Mpeg-2, and Mpeg-4 for downloading and streaming from the site. I want to change those links to point to the IA pages after they are reencoded.
